Support Groups

From the moment we are born, we are all part of a group. They help us to feel not alone.

Trying to build a family can be an unexpected journey with much to navigate. The physical and emotional impact of a fertility journey can elicit feelings that range from joy and optimism, to being overwhelmed, isolated and confused. A fertility journey can evoke many emotions, and in some instances change every part of your daily routine. It can become a 24/7 priority and focus, which for some can feel all consuming.

The support groups will help participants understand the overall impact of their fertility journey while learning from and drawing on the strength of others as they explore the bio-psycho-social impact of their family building journeys.

Intended Parent Consults

For all, heterosexual and LGBTQ people it is filled with unique considerations and an emotional, physical, and financial impact. Intended parents, donors, and surrogates all have an important part in building a family journey.

Building your family through donor conception or surrogacy whether anticipated or not, is a unique experience and there is a lot of information to consider. For many heterosexual people, pursuing donor conception starts after an unexpected family building journey.

With this in mind, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has set guidelines for those using donor egg, sperm, or embryo and surrogacy to ensure all are empowered with information and opportunities to ask questions and explore parenthood with a trained mental health professional.

I am grateful to all those I have worked with. The following are a few special notes

  • “I was part of Lori’s group for infertility and donor conception. She has such a warm and caring nature about her, but more notably is her compassion and deep understanding of the emotional journey that comes with building a family. With her guidance, I was able to weed through my feelings and preconceptions and find peace and pride in my path to parenthood.”

  • “I just wanted to let you know that I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Thank you so much for your support during my journey and showing me how to stay hopeful through it all. I still want to order your book for when we tell our baby about his story.”

  • “I will never forget the comfort I felt from your support group early on in my IVF journey. Two years later, I just had my first donor egg embryo transfer and I am over the moon excited and anxious!”

  • ”The support group for intended parents helped me feel I am not alone on this journey. The group was very compassionate after hearing my story and helped me resolve many of my unsettled feelings. It was nice to relate to other people in a similar situation as I was and understand what they had gone through and how they moved forward. I was able to connect with them after the group meetings and most of all, it was extremely important to hear how happy others were after giving birth and how rewarding being a mother is. Thank you Lori for facilitating this group and fostering our ability to come together.”

  • ”I appreciated hearing from others and how you helped direct and focus the conversations. 100%. The overall experience was really helpful and I really appreciated the skills I gained from the exercises and homework. It was also nice to build stronger relationships with other women who experience infertility too. Thank you so much Lori, you truly offer such a great gift! I appreciated being a part of the group so much. Your facilitation, guidance and insights were incredible. It really has been life-changing and provided a huge life line.”

  • ”The number one reason for joining - was to be in community with others who are walking this path. I feel I got that in a very rich way. It is helpful to be “real” and to shed the world of secrecy and platitudes while in the group space. Even if all our situations were not exactly the same, it is so helpful to not feel alone and to be in the authenticity of what we are experiencing. I really appreciated how you facilitated the conversations and kept it real. Lori, thank you.”

I Dreamed of You, the story of an egg donor baby

By Lori Metz, LCSW, CCM, BC-TMH

I Dreamed of You tells the story of how the parent and child came to be together. It allows the mother a way to open up this critical conversation and to embrace all of the love, caring, nurturing, and desire she gave to her child from contemplation to birth and beyond. It takes so much love to tell how the child came to be, and this is a love story.
